Electrical Muscle Stimulation
in Greenville and Winterville

Electro-Muscle Stimulation is a special form of electrical current that is administered at the site of a soft tissue injury, especially muscles, for the blocking of pain.

At O’Donahue Chiropractic, Dr. James O’Donahue uses this modality to reduce pain sensation and support the healing process.

How Does It Work?

Small amounts of electrical current are induced into affected soft tissues to decrease spasticity and reduce swelling. This widely used technique safely strengthens muscles and helps reduce painful symptoms. Treatment utilizes two small pads—an anode and a cathode—placed on opposite sides of the treatment area. Sessions typically last approximately 15 minutes and are most commonly prescribed during the initial phase of care.

What Does Electro-Muscle Stimulation Feel Like?

Patients generally feel a slight tingling sensation at first. Since your body may become accustomed to the initial setting, the intensity may be raised during the course of your treatment, for maximum healing effect.

Why Is Electro-Muscle Stimulation Used?

Electro-Muscle Stimulation has been used as an effective form of pain relief. It is recommended in cases in which pain is accompanied by swelling, inflammation, and muscle spasticity. The electrical current is designed to block nociception, the pain signals that fire from irritated muscles, joints, or related tissues.
